Floor Layout Metrics

Every square foot of your retail space costs rent. You must measure what it returns.

Sales Per Square Foot

Divide total net sales by the square footage of selling space (exclude stockrooms). The baseline for specialty retail is roughly $300/sqft annually, but this varies wildly by sector.

Zone Analysis

Divide your store into zones (e.g., Front Right, Center Aisle, Back Wall). Assign inventory categories to these zones in your POS. By tracking category sales, you are implicitly tracking zone performance.

The "Decompression Zone"

The first 5-10 feet inside the door. Customers are adjusting to lighting and space. Never place high-margin, complex merchandise here; they will walk right past it. Use this space for high-volume, low-friction impulse items or visual statements.
